Brian Allwood is a Professor in the Division of Pulmonology at the Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg Hospital. He received his medical degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, and completed his training as a specialist physician and pulmonologist at the University of Cape Town (UCT). He has also attained a master’s degree in public health (Clinical Research), and completed a PhD evaluating the link between tuberculosis and subsequent development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
He initiated the multi-disciplinary interstitial lung disease and pulmonary hypertension service at Tygerberg Hospital and was awarded the Discovery Foundation Fellowship to Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard (Boston, USA) in 2017, where he obtained clinical training in pulmonary vascular diseases.
Apart from running the clinical interstitial lung disease and pulmonary hypertension services, his current research interests include post-TB lung disease (PTLD), and particularly, the pulmonary vascular effects after tuberculosis. He chaired the 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd International Post-Tuberculosis in Stellenbosch (2019 & 2023, 2025).
He remains committed to teaching and training in pulmonology, and in
particular the training of pulmonologists for the African context, as well as addressing
respiratory problems relevant to Africa and South Africa.
