Dr Bentley is a general practitioner who has been seeing patients with all types of sleep problems, both adults and children, off and on over the last 30 years. She has run both clinical and research sleep laboratories in private practice at the Morningside clinic and the Wits School of Physiology. She has a PhD in Restless legs Syndrome and Periodic Limb Movement disorder. She is the founding chairperson of the new South African Society for Sleep and Health (SASSH). As chairman of the Medical sub-committee for SASSH she wrote and the diagnostic guidelines for sleep testing in South Africa and is currently working on a consensus statement for pharmacological management for insomnia. She has supervised more than 30 post-graduate students, has over 30 published peer-reviewed articles and two book chapters as well as writing articles for and editing Sleep Matters for 14 years. She is currently in private practice and runs a home-based apnea screening company as well as the first combined clinical, research and sleep training clinic.
